The story follows the sad, frightening and unintelligible first steps of a young man's psychotic breakdown. The protagonist, Michael, lives with his mother; the story is told from her perspective. Michael seems to behave as if he knows what he is doing and as if he has a definite purpose, which he has. However, viewed from the outside, his behavior appears unintelligible.
The climax of the story comes when Michael sees his image multiplying back and forth incessantly in the huge mirrors he has placed on all the walls of his room. Frightened, he crawls to cry in his mother's lap.
