Throughout history, whether in the framework of "enlightened" democracy or "shadowy" totalitarianism, leaders, presidents, rulers, kings and tyrants have employed the phrase "doing justice" to justify and rationalize horrendous bloodshed and war against opponents and innocents alike. But in the name of which values was this justice done? Behind every war ever fought we can find one major intoxicating, accursed motive: power. Often, leaders from east and west, past and present, openly declared that to do justice, they would need to apply force, to use power; perhaps more often, this connection was kept silent. Justice can be done only by equitably distributing happiness and wealth, recognizing the right of every human being to a reasonable and dignified standard of living, and guaranteeing every human resident of this planet access to its resources.
