Sexual ostracism, meaning the absence of sexual relations (whether a boycott or a permanent strike) can function as a weapon in the power struggle between a couple. The denial of sex within intimate relations is a type of punishment, expressing the power available to each partner. It is, however, much more frequently used by women as a bargaining chip in situations ranging from a couple's internal dynamics to actions aimed at social change.
