The author discusses the various forms in which humor's function as a defense mechanism was employed during the Holocaust: reflexive humor, black humor and jokes about food, the last being unique to the Holocaust. The article is based on her dissertation, conducted for the purpose of studying and understanding the various types of humor and uses of laughter that developed during this period.
