The five drawings reprinted here open an aperture that allows us to peer at hypocrisy as practiced by bankers, religious leaders, capitalists, the bourgeoisie and politicians. Each was recruited to convince the masses - the workers or proletariat - that they should believe in the benefits of the new industrial-economic-social system sweeping across society and altering lives. This meant convincing workers to join the parade. Bribery, scheming, conspiracies, shamelessness and alienation are only some of the ingredients of this colorful (tzivonit) mixture that feeds human-social hypocrisy (tzviyut), born much earlier (of course, way back in prehistory - like always?!) yet remains intact. We are all, apparently, in constantly changing magnitudes, hypocrisy's masters as well as its loyal servants
