In what follows, I suggest a metaphor for evil as a person for whom merely killing an insect is not enough - it must be crushed under his heel until its "death" is pulverized into the ground. Seen in this light, an evil person is one who continues to harm his target even after it is clear, to him as well, that he is no longer endangered by the victim. I do not focus exclusively on the social and cultural context that may influence assessments and interpretations made by parties to the encounter. In each of the following paintings and accompanying texts, I identify the action on which I base my judgment as to who is the evil person portrayed.
